Budget Update - Extracurricular Athletic Activity Funding

We are often asked about extracurricular athletic and activity funding. Extracurricular activities can be an important part of a student’s middle and high school years. In our district, over 3,500 students participate in extracurricular athletic activities during a school year in grades 7th through 12th. Funding for these activities comes from levy dollars, gate admission, ASB card fees, and student athletic participant user fees.

  • The majority of extracurricular athletic activity costs are funded from the general fund with local levy dollars. Costs include coaching contracts at close to $2.5M per year, in addition to an allocation of $335K to support middle school and high school travel, referee, and game supervision costs.
  • Gate admission charged for high school events is generally collected by the home team and goes to that school’s ASB fund. In football, if two Kennewick School District teams play each other, the schools split the gate revenue. Total district high school gate revenue for last school year was $140K. High school ASB leadership determines how much of their ASB money will be applied to support athletics. A large portion of the ASB athletic budget is used to fund the purchase athletic supplies and team uniforms.
  • ASB card fees are deposited in the ASB fund and can also be allocated to support athletics and other activities. Last school year, ASB card fees totaled $20K from middle schools and $71K from high schools.
  • Student participant user fees for a school year total close to $51K from middle schools and $70K from high schools. These fees are deposited in the general fund and help offset coaching costs.

Various booster groups and high school clubs have historically operated concession stands during athletic events. The revenues from concession sales are managed by the particular booster or high school club. The funds are then used by that particular group to support their activities which might be athletics, band, DECA, etc.
