Research Requirements:
It’s Time for Real Solutions to Questions that Plague Our Society Research Project
“We are drowning in information, but starving for knowledge.”
John Naisbitt
“Don’t give assignments that make students ‘hunters and gathers’ of information. Our job is to make students think.” Ken Haycock, Pres. AASL
Eureka! That’s it! Right-on! That’s the goal of this week-long project. I want to create thinkers and problem solvers out of my students, not recyclers of information. I can hear the moan and groans of my students and the familiar refrain that follows the moans and groans: “It’s too difficult” “We don’t have enough time,” “Schools almost over-can’t we just sit and talk?” Forget it. It’s time to exercise those brain muscles. Your brains will have 12 weeks to slack. So let’s get to it.
Objectives:
- Students will work in cooperative teams of 2-3 to research a question
- Students will synthesize and evaluate the information researched to propose an answer to the question
- Students will present their findings and answer to the question using Power point, Ulead, or Microsoft Publisher
Procedure:
- Organize into teams of 2-3
- Select from one of the four research questions
- Begin researching the question
- Organize the information on the graphic organizer provided by Mr. Loosveldt. Please note that you need at least two sources: one from print and one online source
- Select the technology you’re going to use- Power point, Ulead, or Microsoft Publisher-to present your findings
Time line:
- Research and graphic organizers completed and turned in Thursday, May 27
- Presentation: Wednesday, June 2nd
