Celebrating Our Seniors: Yesenia Jara

Senior Yesenia Jara was nervous when she started as a freshman at Kennewick High School. Born in the United States, she spent much of her childhood in Mexico before coming to the Tri-Cities to live with extended family so she could earn a high school diploma. Being far from her parents in Mexico and behind in her English made her about worry about how she would succeed. She eventually joined the Kennewick High School Junior ROTC Program.

"I've always wanted to be a cop and I thought the military would be a great place to start," Yesenia says.

The JROTC program became a second family to Yesenia. The program taught her the discipline to improve her English and be dedicated to her studies while she climbed into a leadership role. The other cadets also supported and encouraged her.

Yesenia is currently planning to attend Columbia Basin College after graduation before potentially enlisting in the Air Force and then working toward her goal of working in law enforcement.
