Hawthorne Elementary teacher named Regional Teacher of the Year

Join us in congratulating third-grade teacher Kris Mars of Hawthorne Elementary (and soon Lincoln Elementary) on being recognized as Educational Service District (ESD) 123 Regional Teacher of the Year. The dedication and energy she brings to her classroom each day inspires students and teachers alike.

Described as "the type of teacher every child deserves," Ms. Mars goes beyond simply covering curriculum. She uses music, movement and encouragement to nurture students and push them to succeed. She is a leader when it comes to innovation and is immersed in her school's culture. All of it comes from her drive to honor her husband Bob Mars, who also was a teacher and died in 2004.

"Every letter of support for Ms. Mars spoke to her genuine care for each one of her students," says Troy Tornow, ESD 123 Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services. "She is someone who not only persevered through great adversity, but continues to keep her eye on the prize to make a lasting impact on the lives of each one of her students."

Ms. Mars and eight other regional finalists will be considered for Washington State Teacher of the Year this fall.
