#iamksd: Meet Chinook Middle School's Sara Jo Barrett

Sara teachers sixth grade at Chinook Middle School and previously taught language arts for two years at Delta High School. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern Washington University where she studied how scientific concepts, such as themodynamics, appear in literature.

What do you like best about working at Kennewick School District?

I enjoy taking advantage of the excellent professional development opportunities KSD offers, from training with Kathleen Beers to collaborating on new curriculum. It is a joy to work with such enthusiastic peers at both the district office and Chinook, and it has influenced my pedagogy for the better.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

Now that I teach sixth grade, my favorite part of my job is learning from my students how to be a better person. Sixth grade students are unreserved in their kindness, self-assured about who they are, and enthusiastic about almost everything. They teach me to be more patient, more forgiving, and more generous.

What do you like to do outside work?

I love coaching the 8th grade volleyball B team at Chinook. Once the season ends, I’ll spend my time at home with my husband and cats, reading, playing board games, and teaching myself about graphic design through Adobe’s Design Suite.
