DESERT HILLS MIDDLE SCHOOL

8 th GRADE HEALTH/FITNESS

INSTRUCTOR: MR. OWEN

The following information is designed to help you understand what is expected of you this year. If you or your parents have any questions after reading this, please contact me in person or by phone (222-6600), voicemail (222-6085). I can also be E-Mailed at (owenph@ksd.org).

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this class is to increase the students’ knowledge about, and the importance of HEALTH and PHYSICAL FITNESS. This will be done through lecture, fitness activities, fitness testing, reading assignments, recreational games, and videos.

1. WHAT TO WEAR: PE clothing must be worn only during the Fitness period and not during any other period. Clothing items may be, but don’t have to be, purchased at the school store.

A. T-shirt: The gray Kennewick School District PE shirt must be worn. It can be purchased in the school store for $5.00. Tank tops or crop tops are unacceptable. Shirts must be long enough to be tucked in but do not have to be worn that way. Your name, first and last, must be printed on the front of your shirt.

B. Shorts: Gym shorts of black or navy blue will be worn. Zippers, buckles, buttons, snaps, or cutoffs are not appropriate. Your name on the shorts is recommended but not required. I recommend that you at least put your name inside the waistband.

C. Athletic shoes: For safety reasons you will need to wear an athletic shoe to be able to participate in class activities. Dress shoes, flip flops, sandals, boots, or shoes with heels will not be acceptable. Shoes must be tied or strapped tightly during activities.

D. We will be outside for many activities. Sweatsuits may be worn over your regular P.E. clothing. Jackets and coats are not acceptable for most class activities. Names should be in your sweatshirts and sweatsuits, but do not have to be visible. (Inside the sleeve, leg, or neck band)

2. LOCKS AND LOCKERS

3.0 FINAL GRADE: Your final grade will consist of 20% Health Grade (if we have Health that quarter) and 80% Fitness Grade. Semester Grade will be cumulative of the two quarters. This means you can get an A one quarter and an F the other and still get an F for the semester.

3.1 FITNESS GRADES: You will receive 4 points a day. Points may be deducted for the following reasons:

  1. not participating to the best of your ability
  2. not following rules or directions
  3. being removed from class for disciplinary reasons
  4. not dressed down appropriately or at all (you will still need to participate in an activity)
  5. unexcused tardy to the locker room or roll call
  6. chewing or having gum in your mouth
  7. not returning make-up work by assigned date
  8. unexcused absences – see Attendance policy page #5 student planner

3.2 HEALTH GRADES: Points will assigned for each assignment

3.3 PARENT PORTAL: If at any time you wish to know your student’s grade you can access the Parent Portal. I try to keep the grades fairly current. You can also E-Mail me or send a note with your student.

4. MAKE-UP WORK: It is your responsibility to make sure you know what you have to make-up and when it is due.

Make-up work for Fitness days, please refer to the MAKE-UP WORK HANDOUT. On Health days check with Mr. Owen for missed work.

5 EXTRA CREDIT: Applies only to your daily grade. You can receive extra credit points for exceptional effort during class. If you are participating in any extra physical activity outside the school day, check with me. You may be eligible for some extra credit.
