A Message from Mr. Cannard

Last spring Edison third graders set a new school record as 83% met the district reading goal. Our classroom teachers and additional reading teachers and Para educators continue to provide excellent instruction and remediation to keep all students progressing. We will continue our focused efforts in reading and ask that parents also support reading growth by providing at-home reading time. Encourage your child to read to you, or, if they are not yet readers, read to them. Finding books that tap into your child’s interests will make family reading much easier.

This year students are experiencing Everyday Math, a research-based program developed by the University of Chicago. Students learn math facts not only through hands-on experiences, but also through a variety of games with special number cards. In January we will invite families in for Math Night where we will enjoy some of the Everyday Math games. The Everyday Math curriculum will help our students be better prepared for both the WASL and the middle school math program. Teachers received training over the summer and are putting in extra time to learn this new program.

Did you know that Edison grew the most of all Kennewick elementary schools over last year? Forty additional students were added, bringing our enrollment to over five hundred students. We have several grade levels that are extremely full and we may need to add a portable classroom or two next fall. We will do our best to meet the needs of all of our children in spite of our large numbers.

Sincerely,

Bruce Cannard
