I am pleased to provide you with this
overview of the exciting things happening in our school. At Hawthorne
Elementary, we are dedicated to achieving the highest level of learning
for all students in a safe environment.
We continue to focus a major amount of our efforts and resources on
reading as it is a foundational skill. Each day is filled with challenging
reading instruction for all students. Our school has been honored with
reading awards from our district as well as the state of Washington.
Though our WASL scores have remained very high in this area, we continue
making improvements to increase our effectiveness.
This will be the second year of implementing the Harcourt Math program.
It has raised our already high expectations for students in understanding
the foundational concepts of math. We are pleased with this research-based
math program. It has been an excellent addition to our rigorous reading
curriculum. Our WASL results continue to show improved achievement for
our students in math.
We are also sharpening our skills in evaluating students’ writing.
We believe that working together and sharing our understanding of high
quality student writing is an important step towards helping them become
successful writers. We are encouraged by improvement in our WASL results
in writing.
To encourage and maintain a respectful, responsible, and safe school
environment, we apply the Love and Logic philosophy school wide. This
program helps our students practice higher level thinking skills as
they learn to own and solve their own problems. We believe this is a
lifelong skill that will help build capable and creative adults.
In technology, we are pleased to have a ratio of four students to one
computer. Along with internet capabilities in each classroom, we have
a computer lab in our Library. This lab is available for teachers to
take large groups of students for keyboarding lessons; computer assisted
learning, district assessments, classroom projects, as well as internet
research.
We know that it takes supportive and involved parents to achieve the
kind of results we desire to see in all of our students. Thank you,
parents, for all you do to help us make Hawthorne an excellent place
to learn!
