Dear Parent/Guardian:
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your student to Highlands Middle School for the 2007-2008 school year. I hope that you and your family have had a wonderful and relaxing summer.Our first day of school will be Tuesday, August 28, 2007. You will have an opportunity to meet your student’s teacher during Open House on Tuesday, September 11, 2007. Our office will reopen between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on August 13th. If you have questions, please call the school office at (509) 222-6700.
Important information to note:
- Parent/Student/Teacher Open House: Tuesday, September 11, 2007
- First day of school: Tuesday, August, 28, 2007.
- Length of school day: 7:50 am - 2:18 pm
- Doors open: 7:35 AM. Students must have their ID badges.
- Breakfast served: 7:20. Students must enter through the side entrance near the portables (South side of the building).
- School supplies: Note book paper, binder, loose leaf paper, pencil, pen, calculator, appropriate school clothing.
- Class Schedules: Schedules will be available on the first day of school.
- Second household information: If your student does not live with you full-time and you would like second household information mailed to your home, please contact the school office.
- Restraining orders/parenting plans: If you possess a restraining order against another person or if you have a parenting plan, it is very important that you provide our office with the most current documents bearing the signature or stamp of a judge. We are legally unable to deny parent contact with a child unless the proper documents are on file in our school.
- Free and reduced meals program: If you feel you may qualify for the free or reduced lunch/breakfast program, please complete the enclosed form and return it to our office on or before the first day of school. This will allow us to process your application and qualify your student prior to the first day of school. If you were provided a form from DSHS stating that you qualify for the program, it is not necessary for you to complete this application, but you must provide us with a copy of the DSHS form.
- Bus transportation: The Tri-City Herald will publish school bus routes on Sunday, August 26th. If you need further bus information, please call the transportation office at 222-5076.
- Medication at school: Any medication given at school must be stored in the office and accompanied by an "Authorization for Administration of Medication" form. If your child needs to take medication the first day of school, please pick up and complete this form prior to the first day. A physician’s signature is also required on this form.
- Walkers and private transportation: Please remember to drop off children on Tweedt Street in the morning and pick up students on Tweedt Street in the afternoon. Please avoid dropping students off on 4th Avenue as it can get very busy.
When driving in the area around our school buildings, please remember that our students are often difficult to see.
Please drive slowly and watch for students.
