Principal's Message

By the time you receive this newsletter, there will be approximately thirty school days left, which is hard to believe! May is the time of year when schools begin to consider whether or not specific students are in danger of promoting to the next grade. School Board Policy #R2421 is the policy that guides us in making these decisions. (To read the complete policy, go to www.ksd.org. Along the left side of the web site, click on "Policies". Click on the drop down arrow for "Policy Series" and go to the "2000 Instruction" link and scroll down to the policy.)

By May 15, Park Middle School (and all other middle schools in Kennewick) will "establish a review committee for the purpose of making recommendations about students who may be ineligible for promotion for the next grade." We will look at students who have received failing grades on their report cards, those that have excessive absences, and/or have poor performances on district and state assessments. After reviewing student records, the school will recommend that students either promote to the next grade, be referred to summer school, be retained or sent to an alternative learning placement.

It is our goal that all students be promoted to the next grade. As teachers, counselors and administrators review student performance throughout the year, we recommend after school tutorial, extra periods of math and/or reading or placement in our Welcome Center. However, in spite of our best efforts to implement these programs, there will be students who will not be prepared for the next grade.

Eighty to ninety percent of the failing grades students receive are because they simply do not turn in their homework. The key thing to remember is, "IT IS NOT TOO LATE". If you believe that your child is, or may be in danger of not promoting and would like to know what can be done before the end of the school year, please give us a call. We'll make sure you are in touch with the appropriate teacher, counselor or administrator to figure out what your son or daughter needs to do to promote to the next grade.
