About Our School

Dear Parents:

During the 2007 – 2008 school year the staff at Washington Elementary School concentrated on a few major areas of improvement. We continued to focus on the 4th grade WASL. It is our belief that preparing students for this assessment must begin in kindergarten and 1st grade. We also continue to improve our skills with the “Imagine It!” reading curriculum and the problem solving areas in math. For our math curriculum we have adopted Everyday Math. The Everyday Math series does an excellent job providing students with the information they need to pass the WASL test.

The goals in our School Improvement Plan continue to drive our academic activities at Washington:

READING: 90% of 3rd grade students will reach the 3rd grade reading goal and 90% of our students in grades 3-5 will meet the WASL standard. We will accomplish this by our continued commitment to our small group reading program and our focused remediation plan for below grade level readers.

MATH: 85% of our 4th grade students will meet the WASL standard in math. We will accomplish this by fully implementing the “Everyday Math” program and continuing our “WASL Wednesday” activity throughout the school year. We anticipate working hard to align our math instruction to the new Washington State Math Standards, which will be out in the fall of 2008.

SCIENCE: 70% of our 5th grade students will meet the WASL standard in science. We continue to refine our science scope and sequence align with the state “Grade Level Equivalents”.

WRITING: 87% of our students will meet the WASL standard in Writing. We fully implement the “Step Up To Writing” program throughout our building. Our scope and sequence gives us guidance for making sure our students a re prepared for the 4th grade writing WASL.

For the past five years, more than 90% of our 4th grade students have met the WASL standard in Reading. We think our unique reading program is making a tremendous difference. We met our 3rd grade reading goal again last year, which makes nine years in a row! The results were equally impressive in all grades and subjects. Besides an excellent reading program, we also have a superior staff that is willing to try new things and put in the time and effort needed to make students successful. Good curriculum is important, but the difference is never the curriculum; it is the people who make the difference.

We have made a lot of progress this year. The students and staff have both gained valuable knowledge and look forward to doing more in the future. As always, our top goal is to provide a quality education for your children. You are welcome and encouraged to become involved at Washington Elementary through our wonderful PTO, in classrooms and at school activities.

Thank you for the privilege of working with your children!
