Freshmen who feel connected and involved are more successful in high school.

An IGNITE Mentor is:
A role model
Supportive
Caring
Encouraging
A guide to school activities
A connection to the school

The transition from middle school to high school is a big adjustment and can even be scary.  Students have heard rumors about what high school is like and most don’t know what to expect.  The IGNITE Mentor Program has been specifically designed to help incoming students transition to a new school environment by linking them with older students who are part of the school and who “have been there”.  All freshmen will have the opportunity to be mentored by a junior or senior who demonstrates leadership and strong character.  This connection with older students is important not only to freshmen, but to the mentors as well.  The bonds they create help break through the stereotypical gaps between students.  We see upperclassmen talking to freshmen in the halls, going to after-school activities with them, and helping freshman feel comfortable at their new school.  We see freshmen involved.  This sense of community benefits all students.
