Southridge Lifeskills program focuses
on helping our students get ready for life after high school. Our
students participate in school functional academic classes, electives,
and physical education as well as community experiences. The students
also enjoy the many other aspects of high school including assemblies,
concerts, sport games, and dances.
Work experience or community access skills are a
high priority in our program. The majority of our students are involved
in off campus experiences on a daily or weekly basis. Some students
spend 2 hours a day going to a job site where they learn valuable
work skills and gain experience at a variety of jobs. Other students
have the opportunity to work on their shopping skills at our local
Wal-Mart. With this activity, the students make lists and purchase
groceries for their parents or they purchase items to make their
lunches. Our program also participates in community access recreation.
Students have gone ice skating, bowling, to the library, out to
lunch at local restaurants, to the pet store and to the mall. Being
able to get out and experience our community while receiving specialized
instruction helps the students gain valuable community skills. Our
students enjoy their off campus opportunities.
