Hawthorne Elementary named 2017 School of Distinction

Hawthorne Elementary has been named a 2017 School of Distinction, the only elementary school in the Tri-Cities to receive the state award, by the Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE).

The award recognizes Washington schools in the top 5 percent of improvement in English Language Arts and Math achievement or graduation rate over a five-year period. Since 2013, the number of Hawthorne students at or above grade level in language arts and math has more than doubled.

“Everyone at Hawthorne believes in the amazing potential of our students and the bar for expectations in academics and behavior is set really high. Everyone puts in a ton of work to make our school environment fun, engaging and rigorous. We are thankful to be recognized for our efforts and to have received this award,” says Principal Craig Miller.

The awards are determined by CEE and its partners in education in the state. Ninety-eight schools were named Schools of Distinction, with only six in Southeast Washington being honored.
