He has a green thumb – and a major award to show for it!

Colt Beaulaurier, a student at Amon Creek Elementary, has been named the 2022 Washington State winner of the national Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program. The win comes with a $1,000 scholarship.

Colt took part in the cabbage program while in Jamie Whitmire's class at Amon Creek last year. Whitmire's students took home a tiny cabbage and then planted and tended to them over the summer, harvesting them in the fall.

Whitmire said her classes have been participating in the program for 15 years, and this is the first time one of her students has won. She's "beyond excited" for Colt, she said.

The cabbage program aims to teach students how to grow healthy food and show them how fun and rewarding gardening can be.

"Here, at Bonnie Plants, we know it takes commitment and attention to plant, care for and to grow a cabbage to the size and quality you were able to achieve. Colt, you did a great job!" the company wrote in a letter notifying Colt of the win.
