Kennewick High Student Raises Guide Dog Puppy

Carson Williams and Chili, the guide dog puppy

Meet Carson and Chili.

Carson Williams is a junior at Kennewick High School, and Chili is the guide dog puppy he trained for the last 1 1/2 years.

Carson taught Chili to sit, stay, wait and much more as a volunteer for the nonprofit Guide Dogs for the Blind. He did such a good job that Chili graduated from his care on Oct. 31 and returned to the nonprofit’s Oregon campus to continue on in the process of becoming a guide dog.

Before Chili’s departure, Carson brought the pup to school to share with classmates about the experience of raising a guide dog. Carson and Chili visited Dan White's Agriculture Science class, where Carson showed pictures and video, and Chili demonstrated some of the commands he’s learned.

Afterward, Chili got to take off his guide dog vest and play.

Carson said working with Chili was meaningful and it's hard to say goodbye.

“I know I’m going to miss him, but I know he is going to be a great dog for some other owner,” Carson said. “It’s worth it in my opinion.”
