Message from the Superintendent

Ready.  When I hear that word, I think of preparedness, or being able to handle what is coming my way.  When I think of the work “Ready” in connection with school, it takes on more specific meanings. 

In the Kennewick School District, we are always thinking about being “Ready.”  We begin early, thinking about our incoming students being “Ready” for Kindergarten.  Another big “Ready” moment happens when students transition from elementary to middle school. Having grade level reading and math skills determines whether or not a student thrives or struggles in this new environment.  As a student moves on to high school, being “Ready” continues to be critical.  Students are expected to do lots of reading in subjects like World Geography, Biology, and Literature.  In addition, most are tackling Algebra as well.  Having solid math skills, both computational and problem solving, are necessary to tackle the difficult subjects that only get more challenging as a student progresses through high school.

Finally, the goal of high school is not just graduation.  We want our students to be “Ready” for college (or any kind of post-high-school education), work, and citizenship.  We know that most of our students will need to continue their education after high school to keep up with the demands of the workforce.  “Ready” is an important guide for all that we do in the Kennewick School District.  We will continue to work with our parents to assist our students to make sure that each of them is ready for each phase of their educational life.
