Message from the Superintendent

Welcome to the Kennewick School District. Our outstanding teachers and staff are committed to providing your children the best education possible. We believe that all students can achieve in school and graduate prepared for success in post-secondary education, work, and life. To guide and set the vision for our work, the Kennewick School Board has approved a new set of strategic plan goals called “North Star Goals”. These goals set our standards for safety, academics, staff development and fiscal responsibility. To view our North Star Goals, please follow this link. Kennewick School District North Star Goals

Another document that guides the work we do in Kennewick is our Ten Year Facilities Plan. Developed by a committee of community and staff members, the plan was adopted by the KSD school board in 2008. I am pleased to report we are making great progress in accomplishing our capital improvement and building projects. Last year we celebrated the opening of Cottonwood, our new elementary school in Badger Canyon, and the modernization of Canyon View Elementary. This year, the students and staff at Southgate are in their newly remodeled building while Sunset View begins its year in the Fruitland building as their school undergoes its transformation. We want to thank the community for supporting the 2009 school bond that has allowed us to move forward on our Ten Year Facilities Plan.  To view our Ten Year Plan, please follow this link. Looking forward, we face many challenges. The State has reduced funding for K-12 public education dramatically over the past two budget cycles. The Kennewick School District’s budget has been depleted by more than $8 million along with reductions in pay for teachers and staff. Through sound fiscal decision making, we have been able to maintain staffing and most programs designed to ensure we meet the needs of all students, whether they are academically gifted or struggle due to barriers such as language or poverty. However, as the news coming out of Olympia portends additional cuts, the future is uncertain. What we can promise you is that we are committed to putting forth our very best efforts to teach all children the skills they will need to be successful in our increasingly technical, knowledge-based, global society.

It is an honor to be entrusted with the education of your children. We encourage you to be active participants and be involved and present in our schools.

 KSD Bus Tours

The world - and education - are changing rapidly. Join me for an insiders' view of Kennewick Schools and our mission of preparing all students for life, work, and citizenship in the 21st century. Tours meet in the administration building at 8:00 a.m. for a continental breakfast and presentations by myself and the principals of the schools we will be visiting. We then board a school bus to visit two schools. We return to the administration building for lunch and a chance to talk about our experience on the tour and issues in education in general. I look forward to meeting you and introducing you to our teachers, administrators, staff, and students.
