Tribal Collaboration
Kennewick School District is working to strengthen the district's relationship with the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation through ongoing collaboration and relationship building.
Land Acknowledgement
In December 2022, The Yakama Tribal Council adopted the Kennewick School District land acknowledgement that recognizes and respects the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation as traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories.
"Kennewick School District rests on the ancestral lands of the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation and recognizes and honors the people of the Yakama Nation. We honor the native peoples who are tied to the land through history, legends, and culture. We acknowledge their descendants who live here and continue as protectors of the land, rivers, lakes, and inhabitants of the surrounding area. This acknowledgment is a sincere commitment to show respect, continue to build relationships, and ensure our students learn tribal history and sovereignty curriculum in our schools."

Kamiakin High School Sub-Committee
Kennewick School District began a consultation process with the Yakama Nation Tribal Council in October 2021 regarding the continued use of the Braves name at Kamiakin High School. Through the consultation process, the Tribal Council authorized continued use of the Braves name and newly created logo in December 2022 with modifications to the imagery and symbols.
Note: The Washington State Legislative passed RCW 28A.320.296 in April 2021 prohibiting the inappropriate use of Native American names, symbols, or images as public school mascots, logos, or team names.
