Tribal Collaboration

Tribal Collaboration

Kennewick School District is working to strengthen the district's relationship with the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation through ongoing collaboration and relationship building.

Land Acknowledgement

In December 2022, The Yakama Tribal Council adopted the Kennewick School District land acknowledgement that recognizes and respects the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation as traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories.

"Kennewick School District rests on the ancestral lands of the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation and recognizes and honors the people of the Yakama Nation. We honor the native peoples who are tied to the land through history, legends, and culture. We acknowledge their descendants who live here and continue as protectors of the land, rivers, lakes, and inhabitants of the surrounding area. This acknowledgment is a sincere commitment to show respect, continue to build relationships, and ensure our students learn tribal history and sovereignty curriculum in our schools.”

Committees

DISTRICT TRIBAL COLLABORATION AND EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Kennewick School District’s Tribal Collaboration and Education Committee is dedicated to building strong, ongoing relationships with the Yakama Nation. The committee supports the implementation of the Since Time Immemorial: Tribal Sovereignty in Washington State curriculum, along with other educational initiatives and events that promote Native American history, culture and perspectives.

By fostering transparency and meaningful community engagement, the committee creates space for all who are interested to participate. We are committed to ensuring Native American voices are represented and valued in decision-making processes, and that students and families are well-informed and empowered to contribute to the educational experience.
